There are plenty of reasons to visit Salem in the fall, but this glowing Halloween experience may be one of the most magical. Hollowed Harvest Harvest, Salem’s only jack-o’-lantern festival, is officially returning for its 6th season on September 18, bringing hundreds of glowing jack-o’-lanterns, animated scenes, whimsical Halloween characters, and immersive fall displays back to the heart of downtown Salem.

Located on Derby Street, right in the middle of one of New England’s most iconic Halloween destinations, the experience is an easy addition to a Salem day trip, weekend getaway, or full-on October adventure.

This year’s return feels especially fitting, too. Salem is celebrating its 400th anniversary in 2026, making it an even bigger year to experience the city’s historic streets, seasonal events, waterfront, restaurants, shops, and unmistakable Halloween atmosphere.

But while Salem has no shortage of spooky things to do, Hollowed Harvest offers a different kind of Halloween magic. It is festive, atmospheric, and family-friendly — more glowing wonder than haunted terror.

Guests can wander through an immersive world of illuminated jack-o’-lanterns, animated Halloween scenes, and story-driven displays that come to life as they move through the exhibit. Think hundreds of glowing Jack-O'-Lanterns, re-animated pumpkin characters, theatrical lighting, and spooky-season surprises around every turn.

One of the biggest highlights is the way the scenes feel alive. Hollowed Harvest is not just a collection of carved jack-o’-lanterns. Animated figures, complicated scenes, expressive characters, and storytelling moments are woven throughout the experience, giving the whole attraction a playful, theatrical feel that breathes life into the Jack-O'-Lanterns in way that is completely unique for Salem.

Along the way, guests may find themselves face-to-face with Madam Flim-Flam, a most unusual psychic whose séances rarely go according to plan. One moment, she may be peering into the beyond; the next, the spirits have ideas of their own. Surrounded by glowing jack-o’-lanterns, flickering light, and a few supernatural surprises, her animated pumpkin corpse brings a burst of mystery and mischief to your journey through the Labyrinth.

You'll find that It also fits neatly into a day in Salem. You can explore museums, stroll past historic buildings, visit shops, grab dinner nearby, and then step into a glowing jack-o’-lantern world whenever it fits your schedule. As Hollowed Harvest is both an indoor/outdoor exhibit, guests visiting during the day will find darkness awaiting them on the inside portions, while evening guests will enjoy the darkness throughout.

For visitors who want to make a fuller night of it, Hollowed Harvest also offers the Salem Haunts Walking Tour. Guests will be lent a special crystal ball that allows them to take their spiritual tour guides along with them as they explore the city! At each stop, they are treated to visions of historic events, eerie ghosts, and incredible effects before given directions to the next location.

It is part ghost story, part history walk, and part theatrical Salem adventure — a fitting add-on before or after stepping into the glow of Hollowed Harvest. Best of all - unlike other tours in Salem, you are free to explore at your own pace and are welcome to eat/shop and wander between tour stops at your own pace. It's recommended that each group of two share a crystal ball, pricing for groups of two is just $35 (about half the cost of a "normal" walking tour).

And if you are already planning ahead, there is a ticket deal worth knowing about: VIP passes are currently being offered for the price of general admission. In past years, this has been the best Hollowed Harvest sale of the season, so early buyers may want to take advantage before peak fall dates get closer.

With Salem expected to be especially busy during its 400th anniversary year, locking in plans early is probably the move — especially for weekends and October dates.
